When we last saw Louis he had taken his Tropical Fish window home to grind and wrap. Little did I ever suspect that when it would return just a few weeks later it would be be all finished-- soldered and all. He brought it in for me to add the final brass channel to it along with some hooks so he could hang it. We touched up the solder, gave it a bath and this is what he took home with him.

I think that Louis was surprised at how well it cleaned up but that's almost always the case. When a window is covered in flux it's hard to see just what you have in front of you. Louis did a great job and he says that this project taught him a lot about making stained glass windows. He plans to continue working at home and I think he's got what it takes to do some wonderful work. Hopefully we'll be able to show some of what e accomplished here on the Blog.

That about wraps it up here for this year. We'll be back next week in 2010 (sounds like Science Fiction, doesn't it?) with all new projects.

Paul
Bayou Salé GlassWorks

A record 11 Completed Projects!

Although we cut it right down to the wire with some of these projects, everyone made their Christmas deadlines and left with a smile on their face. Jane was calm and cool throughout her entire lamp ordeal (probably because I kept telling her not to panic) and at noon on December 23rd Jane walked out the door with her finished lamp made up of the correct number of repeats (7). I'll just let this picture of Jane's 18" lamp do the all talking. It speaks volumes.

Our next project was completed by Julie 2 weeks ago but we weren't able to unveil it here on the Blog until Julie's son received it for Christmas. Since he's been known to pop up here online to see and read what his Mom has been doing we had to keep this one a complete secret. It was fun to see an unaware Julie looking at her finished project with a big smile on her face a couple minutes after she had washed and waxed it. I really think she had a lot of fun making this window and I know for a fact that her son was completely taken with it.

Janice had everything under control during her last class before the Holiday. She was so in control that she, Grace and Cheryl brought in a party's worth of food and drink to celebrate the oncoming Christmas. After most of the food was gone she spotted some new glue chip bevels that Russ had ordered and decided to make a few quick boxes before she went home. These are the 2 boxes both she and Grace made on the spur of the moment.

Julie had completed her Fleur De Lis window 2 weeks ago and then started working on this picture frame for a picture that her husband had taken. It took her just 2 classes to get this project out of the shop and under the Christmas tree. The colors she picked match the print perfectly as you can see.
Cheryl finished soldering the back side of her window. It's a standard Fleur De Lis that cries out SAINTS! There are plenty of thin pieces all throughout this project. Cheryl took her time with them and it really shows. She has uniform lines and trim which is something that can easily make or break this window (figuratively speaking of course).

Grace wasn't just eating pizza, wings, and bread-sticks all night. She was busy finishing off the last of her boxes. Her last set of three were finished in black unlike these which have colored accent pieces in the center of the box tops and rounded off with a copper finish. We saw these tops last week and now we get to see them attached to their bottoms. And after she completed these she moved on over and helped her mother with the 2 glue chip bevel boxes that we saw above.

Since Janice and Grace were using glue chip bevels Cheryl decided that she might as well make a box also. She says that she uses the 4" x 4" box she made almost every day and that this time around she wanted to make something a little larger. This box measures 6 inches wide by 3 inches deep and high. Like Janice and Grace she completed this in about an hour.

Fleur De Lis Windows are certainly the rage here and Catherine's first project turned out beautifully. There are thousands of Fleur De Lis patterns around but this one is just the right shape for the overall size of this window. Making the final border out of the same glass that the Fleur De Lis was made from really gives this a nice, classy look to it.

We always have o put someone at the end of the post and normally I do it randomly but this week there was no choice in the matter since we always feature finished projects first. Camille is still working on his LSU tiger window (This is his 3rd week into it) and he now has the top section completely ground and wrapped. When we see him again he'll be adding his border and soldering this all together.

Now that I think about it we'll be having a LOT of new projects starting after the New Year. We'll see Patty's Tabasco Window and Camille's Tiger. Janice will be resuming work on the remaining windows for her house. Grace will probably get back to work on her Tiger Eye/Fleur De Lis window an we may see Louis' completed Tropical Fish scene next time around also. But who knows what may change inside of 2 weeks. Check back here in 2010 to see just what everyone will be doing!

Paul
Bayou Salé GlassWorks

Merry Christmas To All

All Coming Together

With only a week to go before Christmas we're seeing projects completed just in the nick of time.

Janice's Baby Box is finished! Instead of a standard baby picture we have a unique shot of the families hands all touching. It makes a great picture and is a large part of this eye catching box. The picture is sepia toned so Janice matched it with a light tan waterglass for her border. The final project is as nice a box you could ever hope for.

Grace colored the bottom sections of her 3 boxes she worked on last week and then got the tops attached which completes these 3 beveled boxes. These mid size boxes are the perfect small but thoughtful gift and they sparkle beautifully in the light. Grace offset the clear bevels by coloring her solder black giving these a very rich look.

Even though Grace has 3 boxes down she's still got 3 others in the works. The tops of these have a 1 inch square colored glass in the centers. The accent colors were specifically chosen and, as you can see, they really stand out. With the 3 tops all completed she only has to attach the mirror bottoms and then solder 12 lines before hinging them together. Grace will have these right in time for Christmas.

Earlier in the week Patty sent me a picture of a painting and asked if she could do it in glass. I love a challenge and I have to admit that I love the finished pattern! While I was drawing it out I constantly had one thing in my mind: This is only Patty's second window. That was my way of reminding me to keep it simple, but in the end it didn't need to be simplified at all. It's only Patty's first night working on this and she's already got half of it cut. In fact, the only thing she has left to do is the brick and mortar section that makes up the background wall.

Jane's lamp is together! Last week we were in a bit of a panic when we discovered that there was an error in the pattern and that we needed a 7th section to make this all fit together. Of course she didn't have enough glass for a 7th section so we had to identify it and then find it somewhere online that would be able to have it here in Louisiana with enough time to complete it before Christmas Well, it arrived Tuesday afternoon and was all cut up by Wednesdays class. Once it was all cut and wrapped I tacked the 6 sections together while Jane put together the 7th section. We then dropped the last section into the opening and it was complete. This lamp is sturdy even before it's been soldered.

UPDATE: Jane called me today to tell me that the outside was now soldered so this one is pretty much out the door. I just hope we get to see it again before she delivers it so we can have a final picture of it all lit up.

Catherine got her small inner border attached to her Fleur De Lis window and then went to work on the final border of her window. A double border always makes a window stand out nicely. In fact, if you look at a lot of stained glass windows you'll find that the nicest ones have really elaborate borders that frame the piece. That's what Catherine has here. She brought in a new neutral color in the thinner border and then finished it off with a wider border cut from the same glass that she used in the Fleur De Lis. She even has the first side soldered already so this is another window that will be completed next week, just in time to be wrapped and placed under a tree.

And not to be forgotten is Camille's LSU window. Last week he finished cutting it all out and this week he spent all his time on the grinder. With the bottome LSU section all ground he moved on to the much trickier top tiger eyes section. He's got about an eighth of that completed now and he's got his LSU pieces home with him so he can wrap them during the week. I have to say that he's a natural at this. With VERY little help at all he got his letters all lined up and fitting perfectly. I won't be surprised if the tiger eyes go home with him next week so they can be wrapped.
We'll be moving our Thursday night class to Tuesday night this week so we can get some last minute projects completed before the big day rolls around next Friday. The rest of our classes will be running as normal. See you all then.

Paul
Bayou Salé GlassWorks

Last Minute Problems

We have three completed projects this week with more to walk out the door for the last time during our next class. First up we have Steve's completed Sea Turtle. His excellent use of color and textured glasses really sparkle in this window. Steve completed about 1/3rd of this window at home on his own and you have to admit that it turned out perfect.

Patty brought home her flower suncatchers and came in with them all wrapped and ready for solder. Since they're suncatchers she had to deal with the tricky edging process which can really be a pain, but her cutting and grinding was superb and she flew through that with no problems at all. And best of all, these were made with small pieces of scrap so they cost hardly nothing to make!
When does a simple project become a problem? When there's a deadline looming! Jane started this lamp with the smallest amount of glass and when the instructions that came with the pattern said that there 6 repeats in this lamp we had no reason to doubt it. By the time it was all cut and ground Jane had only a 6"x 4" piece of glass left. Then when she went to assemble it she discovered that it actually takes 7 sections to make this lamp. There was no more glass left to work with and to make matters worse we weren't sure what kind of glass it was. And let's not forget that this is to be a Christmas gift and Christmas is only 2 weeks away and that ordering the glass might take that long to come in. We decided that if worse comes to worst we can space the sections out on the mold evenly and add another row to the design (as you can see in the picture) but Russ spent some time on the phone with his nose in catalogs until he huntged down the correct glass. Another hour later he was able to find a supplier with it in stock from where it would be delivered inside of a week. With only 32 pieces to cut ground and wrap I have no doubt that it will be delivered on time. Tune in next week for an update where I'll hopefully say that the last section has been cut.

Cheryl was all alone in class this week because Janice became a Grandmother again which means that Grace has become an Aunt again as well. Congratulations to both of them!

So Cheryl had our full attention even though she didn't need it. After picking an etched glass for her background she then got the final two borders on her window and took it home to solder. We'll see this finished next week without a doubt. And I have to admit that I love the pattern even if the thin borders are a pain to do.

In a similar vein we get to see how Camille made out with the top tiger half of his window this week. I'd said it would be tricky but all the cutting went just fine and by the time Camille left all of the tiger was cut out. He'll be at the grinder next week. Even in this rough state you can't mistake what those tiger eyes are.

Catherine has all but her borders done on her Fleur De Lis window. She went with a clear crackle background and spend a little time grinding it after she cut it all out. Then before I knew it she had all the pieces wrapped and tacked. Borders never take long to do so I'm sure she'll be ready to solder this next week. And there's been a project someone has been working on that I'm sworn to secrecy about. All I can say is that he's been working VERY hard on this window and it was completed this week. I promise to post the pictures here after Christmas has past so you can be as impressed as I was with the end results.
That's it for this week and this brings us right up to date.

Paul
Bayou Salé GlassWorks

Tracing It All Out

With Christmas right around the corner we have people working on various gifts. So we'll start this post with a look at the flowers suncatchers that Patty traced out, cut-out and then ground. It's a good deal of work to achieve in one night and I'm impressed with Patty's abilities this early on.
Louis got all of his window cut out and even got a good section of it ground before he called it a night and took it home to work there with it. Sadly, I forgot to take a picture but what you see below gives you a good idea of what his window looks like. Although the fish haven't been cut out in the picture below you can rest assured that they are cut and that half of this window is ground. I can't wait to see this one completed.

Steve has finished soldering the front side of his window and has moved on to the back side. All this needs is a brass channel surrounding it and and a bath. After that we'll get to see it held up in the light. Steve's been spending a lot of time working on his glass in his shop at home so expect to see some big things in the coming months from him.

As you know, Grace has begun working on a series of beveled boxes. Last week she did the tops and this week she's managed to complete 3 bottoms. She has a few more to make so AFter these are joined together she'll be doing more of the same.

Meanwhile Janice got the background cut, ground wrapped and then tacked together for her baby announcement box. When that was finished she moved along and wrapped the bevels for 4 small bevel boxes of her own. I must say that they've been very popular this year.

Jane has completed cutting out all the pieces for her lamp and assembled 2 of the 6 sections that make it up. Pretty soon it will all be tacked together and we'll really get a feel for what this lamp will look like when it's completed.

Catherine has started her first window and she's decided to make a Fleur De Lis design. Here's the pattern with the actual Fleur De Lis all cut ground and wrapped. Next week she'll tack it together and then cut the background. That will end the hard part of making this window. Notice how nicely Catherine followed her cuts: the lines of the large center top piece flow perfectly to the smaller bottom centerpiece just as they're supposed to. I've seen a lot of Fleur De Lis windows in my time and it's that detail that always seems to be off on the them.

Camille has decided to make an LSU window as his first project. He traced out his pattern and we decided to start with the easiest cuts first to get him comfortable with the glass cutter. I didn't want to see him get discouraged by trying to cut out those tiger eyes first because they're both complex and tricky to cut. But judging by the way he got all of his bottom section cut I'd say he'll have no problems with the top half of this.

Christmas is almost upon us. Although we have no completed projects this week we'll be seeing plenty of them in the weeks to come.

Paul
Bayou Salé GlassWorks

On The Eve Of Thanksgiving

We had 5 students in on Wednesday night even though it was Thanksgiving Eve. I call that dedication!

When I last saw Steve he walked out of the shop with a brand new grinder and his unground window. When he walked in Wednesday night (not even a full week later) he had not only finished grinding his window but he had it foiled as well. He tacked it together in class, got his border both cut and tacked and then began soldering. He's doing great and has taken it home with him. I highly suspect that this will be a completed window next week.

Meanwhile, Louis managed to complete cutting both of his tropical fish for his window. He seems to be completely comfortable with his cutter now and when he moved over to the grinder he watched me grind just 2 pieces of glass to demonstrate and then he jumped right in. He got a lot accomplished and I suspect that he'll be wrapping glass after his next class. this is going to be a nice colorful window and Louis should be proud of the work he's accomplished.

Janice has decided to work on Birth Announcement box which is simply a Wedding Box with a picture instead of a wedding invitation. She's making the Entwined Hearts pattern with colors matching the birthstones garnet and turquoise. She'll finish the background next week and then move on to smaller beveled boxes because the baby this is being made for will most likely not be born yet. Without a birth we can't have a picture and without a picture we can't finish the box. But the hard part will be completed.

And speaking of small bevel boxes, guess what Grace worked on this week? She wrapped the bevels for 3 boxes and got the tops completed for all 3. Next week she'll have the bottoms assembled and we'll attach them and call it a night.

Now you may be saying to yourself, But wasn't Grace working on a Fleur De Lis / Tiger Eye window last week? Well yes she was but after she cut out all the purple glass early on in class she decided to move on to her next project and do her grinding at home. Here's the window you were all wondering about.
Okay, I have to say that I was completely impressed with Cheryl's work this week. She's emailed me and said that she never got a chance to work on her window while it was home so she would be grinding when she came into class. The amount of detail this window has made me believe that she's be grinding for 2 classes but was I ever wrong. In one class she got the whole thing perfectly ground. An exact fit is necessary for a window like this because if you're off at all your eye will pick up the lack of symmetry and it will just look awful. As you can see in the picture below that's not the case here!

Rather than being slaves to an oven on the night before one of America's biggest feasts we were all laughing at each other and cursing our broken glass. Either way, we all had fun.

Paul
Bayou Salé GlassWorks

The Two Finger Method Of Cutting Glass

Patty has come up with a new method of cutting glass that she calls the "Two Finger Method". You cut your glass and while you're breaking it you cross your two fingers and pray. :-) Hey, it certainly can't hurt!

Well, this week we get our last look at Janice's 4 x 3 window that she made for her son. It's based on a design that he came up with combining the smiling and frowning faces that are traditionally used to represent the theater, and the Acadian flag with some Baton Rouge elements thrown in to round it all off. The window turned out beautiful and Jance really did a good job dealing with the large pieces of glass that make up this window.

Patty has her first window completed and you've got to admit that it certainly doesn't look like a first project. Nothing about Patty's window says that she's new to this art. She's a natural at this and I expect well be seeing more great windows from her in the

And speaking of naturals our latest student, Catherine, made this butterfly this past week. Her ability to cut glass and follow a line with the cutter was amazing. Perfect pressure and perfect cutting lead to this perfect butterfly.

Grace traced out the pattern to her latest Tiger Eye/ Fleur De Lis window. With the yellow and the white all cut we should see this window completed fairly soon. I can't wait to see this after she gets the purple cut out.

As promised, Louis managed to get enough of his window cut out so we can really see what it looks like now. I think Louis has gotten the feel of the glass now and no longer worries about each cut he's making. No one is ever 100% confident that a cut will break correctly but the process goes much smoother when you're confidence level is high and you're not worries about crossing your fingers with each cut you make.

Steve is finished with his cutting and has moved on to grinding his window. He's so into this that he ordered a grinder and then picked it up on Thursday along with his window so he could work on it at home. There's no telling how far along he'll be when he returns this week.

Jane has begun cutting the glass for her first of 2 stained glass lamps. The 2 lamps will be identical in design but the color schemes will be different. I have to say that I love her choice of glass. The color she picked for her in her trim is incredible.

Pam is almost finished with her cross window. She worked on this while she was at home and she's up to the soldering stage now. I must say that she's really taken to the soldering process. This window is almost finished! And Cheryl's latest window may be a Hell to grind, but it's certainly going to be worth it. She traced the pattern out this week and she's already got 61 pieces cut out and ready for the grinding wheel. A double border is really going to set this window off nicely.

We'll have a limited amount of students next week because of everyone's Thanksgiving commitments but we'll have an update on everyone that shows up. Check back then.

Paul
Bayou Salé GlassWorks

Party Time

We had a birthday feast for Russell on Wednesday night thanks to Janice, Cheryl and Grace. The cake was (as always) to die for. Thanks to everyone who had a hand in this for the wonderful food.

Grace has completed her first box. She had a hand in every part of this right down to the design of the 'invitation' to the left of the stained glass flowers. It's very pink and came out perfectly.
Grace will be starting an LSU Fleur De Lis window next week.

Cheryl worked on 3 box bottoms and then attached the lids to all 7 boxes. She's well ahead of time for Christmas and that's always a good thing. I wish I could take note on this strategy! Don't these look great?

We had a Camille begin classes this week which means that we have a new butterfly to look at. Camille chose different shades of purple for his butterfly but the shading of the glass didn't photograph well since there was no sunlight left in the day at 9pm. :-( Still, this gives you an idea of what he accomplished on his first night. Camille had no problems whatsoever and I think we're going to see some wonderful work from him in the near future.

Patty has her border attached and the front side of her window all soldered. This one is going to be finished next week and I must say that the pearls added a certain style to the window. They're hell to solder but the more work you put into a window the more enjoyment you'll receive from it.

Janice has cut her last piece of glass for this window. With her borders all cut and tacked into place she began soldering this beast of a window. Don't forget that the size of this is 4 foot by 3 foot which makes it very large. Alas, soldering it should be fairly easy since there aren't many pieces and there's not many lead lines.

Just look at Steve's Turtle! With everything cut but the small pieces on its head and legs, Steve is making excellent headway with his window. He cut his large sections of water without even batting an eye. He'll begin grinding this next week.

Jane began working on her lamp. This is the mold with the pattern attached to one section. She'll make 6 sections and join them all together to make a completed lamp. She plans on making 2 of these but is working on them 1 at a time. She's discovered that the recommended amount of glass is GREATLY overestimated by about one third. She was pretty sure she didn't have enough glass for her secondary color but we got all the pieces out with some left over to spare in case there's breakage.

Pam is back in from Texas and decided to come to class so she could make a cross window. She got the cross cut, ground, wrapped and tacked together and half of her background is cut. She plans on working on this while she's staying at Jane's.

That about wraps it up for this week. We'll have a lot of new projects starting next week so come back and see what get's laid out on the cutting table next.

Paul
Bayou Salé GlassWorks

An Unexpected Visit And a BUSY Night

Another week brings us some news to pass along to you. We'll be attending the "Franklin Christmas On The Bayou" this Saturday on Main Street in Franklin this week. It runs from 12 noon to 6pm and looks as though it will be a fun event. If your nearby or looking for something fun to do on Saturday, Nov. 14th be sure to drop by and say hello. Food, music, fireworks, crafts, and a lot of people will be there. We'll be in the blue tent with all the stained glass. Click here for more details: "Franklin Christmas On The Bayou With A Trail To the Lampposts" If you stop by make sure to say hello and let us know that you read about it here in our Blog.

Ok, let's get started on what happened in classes this week. Cheryl made 4 box bottoms this week and has 5 left to go. The problem with box bottoms is that you can't start them one week and then finish them the next. The mirrors on the bottom of each box need to be washed and dried as fast as possible so that means we have to finish what we start. Four boxes in one night is VERY good. There are only 8 small 1/8 inch joints left to solder so that the tops are attached to the boxes so these will certainly go home next week. Oh, and Cheryl gets extra kudos for getting the feet attached all on her own. She made a tricky process look easy.

Louis began working on his firs stained glass window- It's a pair of Angel Fish which is hard to see in the first picture since only the ground is cut but mark my words, next week you'll easily see what this window looks like. We just need a little more detail to show.

Steve's window is a bit easier to pick out because his detail is confined to the back and the legs of his Turtle and we didn't cut that section of his pattern out yet. Nonetheless, both windows are coming along great for Steve and Louis. I can't wit to see what they look like after the next class.

We weren't sure how things were going to go when it came time to cut the pearls into Patty's background but all in all it went VERY well. Not only is it all tacked together but she's also got her border cut and ground. It's at her house right now and will be wrapped when she comes back on Thursday and then begins soldering. She wasn't sure what color to make her border and we played around with pink at first but in the end we all liked the green better. I think it was a good choice. We also did a quick readjustment to cover one small break that was unplanned. I don't think anyone can figure out where that break was and it really helped show how we can fix minor problems without re-cutting huge areas.

Janice has 2 borders cut, ground, wrapped and tacked. That means there's only one left to go before she starts soldering this window. It's starting to take shape so you can see what it really looks like now. I'd say she's just about finished with this one and the soldering won't be hard to do at all.

Grace has the top of her pink wedding box almost completed. When I wrote about her progress last week I forgot that Grace would need to cut out the background of her flowers before she could cut the borders. Nonetheless, it's done now and the top of her box is ready for soldering. With only the bottom left to assemble I suspect that we could see this one finished during the next class.

Our unexpected visit came from Julie when she managed to come into class on a night that she thought she wouldn't be able to show. This week she was out of town and arrived home in time to put in a good performance by cutting out the background for her window. Next week she'll be out of the state so I'm really doubting that she'll surprise us this coming Thursday. Since what she's working on is a surprise this is all I can show you of her progress this week. :-)

We have another new student starting next Thursday so get ready for another butterfly. See you then.

Paul
Bayou Salé GlassWorks

One and One Quarter

We're beginning this post with an important message to our part time students. We've thought long and hard about this and have decided to suspend our Wednesday day class due to a lack of participation. Part time day students interested in starting or completing any projects will need to schedule a session in one of our 3 night classes (Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday). These classes are not always open or available so please call well ahead of time to be sure that we have a spot for you.

Ok, with that said let's move on to our two newest students, Louis and Steve. They've been interested in in doing some work on their own and have even gone so far as to buy a lot of the tools to work with glass. This week they each made a butterfly and next week they'll start on their main projects. Neither one of them had any problems and I must say that their ability to cut glass was much better than the average beginner. They both used the same yellow glass to make their butterflies so I'm not entirely sure which one is which but here's a look at what they accomplished.

(I think this one is Steve's)

(And I believe this one belongs to Louis)

Patty came in with all her pieces wrapped so we tacked them together and I gave her a lesson in tracing out your finished pieces onto a sheet of glass and then cutting the background out so that
grinding is cut down to a minimum. She's taken her background home with her to wrap and next week we'll add the 'pearls' to this window.

Janice got all her background cut as well as her first (of three) borders. She has three sides of the border wrapped and ready to be tacked. We'll have the center clear border ready next week.

Grace brought in assorted color papers and a printed out lyrics so we could make a side panel for her flowers. After squaring off the text and cutting away the excess paper she picked a light pink pattern to mat the lyrics. We sealed the finished product in between 2 pieces of clear glass and then she cut out the second flower. There's only the border left to do and the top of her box will be completed.

Speaking of boxes, Cheryl took home a slew of bevels last week and came in with enough of them warped to make 7 lids. They're soldered, hinged, washed and waxed so she could start working on bottoms next week.

Julie is making a mystery Christmas gift for Ray and I've been sworn to secrecy about what it is. I've taken some pictures but won't be posting any of them until he gets to see the actual completed project. All I can safely say is that she'll be working on the background next week.

That brings us up to date this week. I've always liked the tiger eyes window and combining it with the standard LSU design makes this window really catch your eye. Cheryl finished soldering this in class which means that she'll be starting something new next week. I believe she may be making beveled boxes...

Janices window is really taking shape now. With the three sections of the flag taked together she bgan working out the best way to cut the background pieces. Although I didn't think it would be possible we were able to get all of the background out of just 2 sheets of glass. It took some juggling and even then it was close but it's a done deal now. Janice is just 3 borders away from completing this window.

Grace has decided to skip to a smaller more simple project this week. It's a wedding box design but instead of using a wedding invitation she'll have the lyrics to a song printed out and encased in glass. She'll be bringing the actual lyrics next week and we should make some serious headway into the box then. Right now she has one of the flowers cut.

That was about it this week. Jane's pattern came in for the 2 lamps she'll be working on so I expect to see a lot of pieces building up in Jane's corner soon.

Paul
Bayou Salé GlassWorks

Finished Projects

After having 2 weeks with no completed windows I'm pleased to tell you that this week we have not one but TWO spectacular windows to show you.

Grace has completed her Fleur De Lis Geometrical window. I knew it was looking good but even I was surprised at how great it looked when it was lit up. She had watched me attached the zinc channel and then I told her to just leave it so I could wash it for her outside with the hose in the daylight. Plus, it meant I'd get a good picture in natural light when it was finished. When she left it looked like this:

After it got a bath and some sunlight behind it we can really see it for what it is. An incredible piece of work that Grace should be very proud of. I love the deep blue border and you'll see that it's kind of a theme this week.

Next up we have a look at Julie's first window. She moved along pretty quickly on this project and as I said last week her soldering was very impressive considering she's never done it before. Again, I love the deep blue border. I also think that adding the amber diamonds in each of the joints made this window look much nicer than the original design that Julie brought to my attention. I think this is a very traditional looking window and Julie couldn't have done anything better of she'd tried.

Janice cut the bottom red sections of her window and now that they're cut the rest of this should be simple. All that's left are a few background pieces and then a triple border which will be easy to cut. Look for a better view of this window in our next post.

Patty came in and spent the night working at a grinder. I hate to sound like a broken record but Patty also did amazingly well considering this is the first time she's had to grind anything so exactly. She took her ground pieces home with her to wrap and next week she'll begin cutting the background of her window.

Cheryl tacked both the tiger eyes and the LSU portion of her window together and when that was all said and done she began soldering a little of the front side. By the time the night was over she'd managed to get the borders all cut and took the whole thing home with her to wrap and possibly solder. One more week should bring this window to a close. Look for another completed project next week. :-)

And Grace began working on her next project-- a deer window. She got the pattern traced out and then cut it all up so that she can begin cutting glass next week.

It was great to see some finished windows this week I've been doing a lot of small work lately and now that I'm seeing some large windows completed I'm getting an itch to work on something large again. But I have a few orders that I need to get finished before I can start making what I want to. I'm leaning towards a fancy Carousel Horse but who knows what will happen ny the time I get to making something for the shop.

Paul
Bayou Salé GlassWorks

Julie Is a Soldering Wiz!

The first week of October was somewhat slow in class but we're starting to pick up again. That said, I'd best get caught up here.

Grace wasn't able to make it in because she had to work. Janice didn't have the red glass to continue with her project so rather than start working on her next window she decided to help Grace by soldering the second side of her window. By the time the night was over the second side was completed and ready for a zinc channel and a bath. Here's the second side of Grace's window unwashed. We will see this one completed next week.

Patty made an incredible amount of progress on her window. She traced out her pattern, cut the paper pattern up and then traced the leaves, flowers and bird onto their respective pieces of glass. Then she picked up her cutter and got everything cut out! She'll be grinding this next week.
Julie tacked her border onto her window and then began soldering the front side. She was a little nervous about soldering (everyone starts off that way) but after she had done a line or two she had the hang of it. Right around the time Patty was finishing cutting her glass Julie was finishing the front side of her window. She'll have the second side completed next week and get a look at the finished window!Come back tomorrow to see Grace and Julies windows completed and ready to hang!

Paul
Bayou Salé GlassWorks

The Home Stretch

It was a quiet week this time around but that doesn't mean nothing was accomplished. Janice cut the white and blue backgrounds for her window leaving only the red left to go before the majority of the work is completed on this project.

Julie is finished with all the glass cutting for her window. She took her border pieces home to wrap and will begin soldering her window next week. You can already get a good feel for this window even though the border is just lying next to the rest of the window.

Grace continued soldering the second side of her window. Here's one of the finished corners that she was working on.

And Cheryl cut and ground the LSU section of her window. Once these are tacked together it will just need a border to finish it off.

Patty wasn't able to make it in this week but this is the pattern I think she's going to end up working on . It may receive a minor tweak or two but this will give you a general idea of what her first project will be.

We didn't have any finished projects this week and I doubt we'll see any in the next post either, but after that we should start to see completed windows filling up the Blog again.

Paul
Bayou Salé GlassWorks

Point To Point

We have a new student this week. And we all know what that means: "Have you ever cut glass before?", "Next we're going to cut a circle", "Before we cut the curve we cut point to point", "The grinder can't cut you", "That's a graceful curve", and "We aren't waxing the glass, we're waxing the lead". And after all those standard lines that a new student hears and the old students are sick of, we get a butterfly.

And this is Patty's completed butterfly. Talk about someone who has no problem cutting glass. She said she's never done it before but she could sure fool me. Patty's orange butterfly came out perfectly and I'm looking forward to getting her started on a larger window next week.

This pattern was drawn up about 2 years ago but no one ever made it until last week when Tommy decided to try something a little different from his standard LSU letters. I think it works nicely.

Meanwhile, Cheryl worked on re-cutting the pieces her cat knocked on the floor. I knew she'd manage to catch up to where she should have been and sure enough her tiger eyes are all cut and ground just waiting to be wrapped now.

Julie has a good 80% of her window tacked together and it's looking great. She'll certainly finish cutting her glass next week and get to work on her border. There's on the upper left side of her background that needs to be cut before she cuts a border (if she decided to put a border on this window).

Grace has finished soldering the first side of her window and we turned it around so she could get the second side. She's got her next window all picked out already and it will be a little smaller than this project. But that's not to say that it isn't just as nice...

Christine cut out a lot of this rose cross while she was at home and then finished cutting the remaining pieces while she was in class and then ground everything as well. She's taken it home to wrap and I'm sure we'll see the finished results next week.

Janice took a much deserved break from her windows to do this happy/sad face theatrical design. Although it's a large window (4 foot by 3 feet) it should go fairly fast for her. It's a bit hard to see what it is just yet you should start to see it taking shape next week.

And that was it this week. Jane will be working on 2 lamps next week and I can't wait to see what they look like. I know Fran is working on some more masks at home and she plans to have them all cut ground and wrapped when she comes in.

Paul
Bayou Salé GlassWorks

The Eye Of A Tiger

We've been away on vacation and getting ready for the week off has tied me up more than expected. This update is actually from 2 weeks ago so disregard the date on this post and realize that all you are about to read happened during the second week of September. Look for this weeks blog to be posted Friday night (we just wrapped up classes for this week tonight (Thursday)).

Janice has completed the last window of this pattern! I think she can do them in her sleep now. She still has a few more to go but they will all be made from the secondary pattern. But before she starts those she plans on taking a bit of a break and work on a window for her son.

Julie accomplished a lot this week when she began cutting the background pieces of her window. She got the laurel wreath section tacked together and then cut the glass between it and the rose. After that was ground and wrapped she tacked it into place and then got the right side of her window's background cut and ground. She took those pieces home with her to wrap and will tack that section together during her next class.

Cheryl began working on an LSU/Tiger window but I forgot to take a picture before she walked out the door with it. So I've found some early pictures of the last one she made and am re-posting one of those pictures to let you see just what it is she's working on. Regrettably, one of Cheryl's cats jumped on her project and broke 10 pieces when it landed on the floor. It's a set-back but only a slight one. She'll be back on track when we see her again during the next class.

Grace has the front side of her window almost completely soldered. There's no doubt in my mind that she'll flip it over and begin the back side of her window during her next class. We're removed it from the board that it was built on and I must say that it's a nice and sturdy window when you lift it up.

That's about it for the second week of September. As I said, I'll have another post for this week on Friday evening which will bring us up to date again.

Paul
Bayou Salé GlassWorks

Cheryl's Peacock Window Takes 1st Place!

A big Congratulations! goes out to Cheryl whose Peacock window that she completed in June won 1st Place at the "Shrimp And Petroleum Festival" in Morgan City Wednesday. Also, we had cake and cookies and Hurricanes during our Wednesday night class to celebrate something that will be revealed in an extra Blog post tomorrow... I'm going to leave all of you in suspense with that teaser and move on to the progress that was made this week.

Gerald's window is complete and back at home. In fact it's most likely installed into his mother's front door by the time you are reading this. He's promised to send us pictures of it from the house so we can get the full effect of the flowers. In the future he plans on doing the two sidelights that surround the front door. Didn't this turn out nice?

Cheryl has finished her cat window. She did the lions share of the soldering at home and we both agreed that a final border really wasn't necessary for this design. Rather than using a thin brass channel Cheryl went with the wider zinc channel which actually frames it out nicely. We loved the cookies and the Hurricanes that Cheryl brought with her. Which reminds me that I have to give out a BIG "Congratulations!" to Cheryl (have I built up enough suspense already?)

Denise hasn't been sitting home just watching TV all day this past summer. She's made a Magnolia window (can you see the fancy hangers she made for it? They're nice!) and an LSU style window complete with half of a Fleur De Lis. Here's Denise's Magnolia Window:

And here's Denise's LSU style window:
Janice added her border and began the final soldering job for her window. She has three more to go after this one but she plans on taking a break and doing something a bit different after this window is completed. After doing 8 of these windows (possibly more-- I've lost count!) I can understand why she wants to tackle something else to break up the monotony. BTW, thanks for the great cake, Janice!

Grace went to work soldering her window. It's been a while since she's used a soldering iron and with the added burden of having used 1/4 inch foil I thought that I might need to give her a refresher course in soldering. I was wrong. Grace is taking her time and getting the bead correct on the first shot which really makes this go easier since it's much tougher to smooth the lead line out by remelting the solder. This window is really shaping up to be spectacular.

Jane worked on the border of her Peacock window this week. After it was all assembled she attached the zinc channel to finish it off. She'll complete the soldering at home and we should see a finished Peacock next week. Jane is looking at lamps again and is thinking about possibly making a pair of lamps for the nightstands in her guest room.

So there you have it. During class she made 3 different matching stands. She said she enjoys making them and I have to say that I understand that completely. Although they may not be very practical, they are a great project because you make it up as you go along. It's very creative.

Jane is working on the border of her Peacock window now so this should be finished soon. Jane flew through this window and it's looking great!

Jane has 2 irons in the fire this week as she is also working on this Fleur De Lis window. She only needs to cut 6 pieces of background glass and this will be ready. Something tells me we'll see it completed before she arrives for her next class.

Julie is moving along wonderfully with her first window. This is her second week on it and she's all set to start working on the background next week.

Janice is about to wrap up this window. It won't be ready this coming week but it will certainly be finished the following week. After she adds the final border and the 4 triangle corners this will be ready to be soldered. They say practice makes perfect and this proves it!

Grace has it all together now. The only thing left to do is solder this and decide on the 8 small accent pieces. It's been a long haul for Grace but the payoff is right around the corner now. And the experience she's gained making such a large window is invaluable.

Gerald's window is ready to be washed, colored, waxed and installed. That won't even take half of a class to do. (Besides, I said I'd do it for Gerald since it will be easier to do outside with the hose during daylight!) Look for the finished picture of this one in our next blog entry.

Does this look like a fat cat to you? I don't think so but it seems to be getting a bad rep during class. We're leaning towards NOT putting a border on this but we'll see what happens next week when it's all tacked.

Th-th-th-that's all folks!

Paul
Bayou Salé GlassWorks

Lions, Giraffes and Elephants (Oh My!)

Classes are picking back up as you can see by the number of projects we have this week. There's been a steady rain each day here in the bayou and it seems to have brought some students back into the fold. :-)

Jane completed her Jungle Scene Window and there's no mistaking any of the animals in it. It's yet another job well done by Jane. All it needed was to be colored so this wasn't all she worked on this week. Keep reading to see what else she's been doing at home.

Gerald had a quick project he needed to take care of this week. The clear plastic in his kitchen light fixture had turned milky with age and was no longer lighting the room very brightly. Although we didn't have any clear, textured glass big enough to replace it in one piece Gerald was able to join some textured glass and make it work nonetheless.

Julie is our newest student and tonight was her first real stab at making a window. It's a big one (41" x 24") but a great pattern to start with. She managed to pick out all her colors and then cut out a good portion of her window and then grind it. The center rose isn't ground but Julie has taken the rest of the pieces you see below {click on the picture for a larger view} home with her to wrap during the week. Next week the rose will be ground and she'll probably have the ribbons and laurel wreath sections cut as well.

Gerald finished his light fixture Wednesday night and resumed working on his front door Iris window. The back side is almost completely soldered and I suspect that next week we'll see this piece completed. I can't wait to see it in the door.

Cheryl's Kitten is looking slimmer to me this week-- maybe because it's all ground and wrapped. She only has a handful of pieces left to go before she finishes this window. I have no clue what she plans on making next but it's getting to the point where she should start considering it!

Grace has flat soldered the front of her window and then removed the boards that kept the window square so she could add the first of 2 borders that will finish off this panel. She went with a nice deep blue for the first border and will go back to a smoke gray for the last border. She'll begin soldering this next week for sure!

Janice started working on her last window (of this design) for the 2nd floor of her house. When she came in she had nothing to show but 4 bags of pieces. She discovered that one of the bags wasn't wrapped yet which should have slowed her down but it didn't. After wrapping them she tacked the centerpiece together and then ground the red round/oval accent pieces. The bottom half of her background was cut ground and wrapped as well and then Janice called it a night (whew!). This one is moving fast, just the way she likes it. :-)

And in the end we have Jane who cut the body, neck, head and leaves for her peacock panel after her Jungle Window was completed. She's been working on this one while at home (as she usually does) and I'm amazed at how fast she's going through this progress. But it really helps when it's something that you really want to make as is the case with this.

There's more coming next week as we have several projects very near completion. Stop by and check things out again in 7 days-- you never know what will turn up next.

Paul
Bayou Salé GlassWorks

Cheryl's Fat Kitty

We have a lot of finished projects this week so let's jump on in.

Janice has another of her windows under her belt. With only one more of this design to go she'll soon be able to say farewell to this pattern forever. :-) She's almost finished with the next one since she has all but the background and border all cut out, ground and wrapped.

Fran finished her large Mardi Gras Mask and decorated it with 2 strings of beads. The darker iridescent black beads got lost against the mask but when she alternated them with silver beads they stood out just fine. Here's the first of 2 masks that Fran completed Wednesday.

This is the other mask Fran finished. It may look familiar because it was actually done a while back but we discovered a design flaw that made it come apart. There was a straight line along the star portion of the left eye which folded in half. We were able to rewrap a few pieces and add a wire along the eye hole which made it nice and sturdy. This one will stay together forever now.

I promised you a butterfly in out last post and here it is. Julie did wonderfully and went with Spectrum red granite back wings, a yellow antique body and a yellow cats eye glob for the head. I think we're going to be seeing some great things from Julie in the near future. We still don't have a pattern for what she'll be making next week but she still has plenty of time to decide on what she'll be making.

I finished this window which we call Volker's Window to replace a different window that was sold at the Farmer's Market last week. The window was named after the the customer we originally made it for to avoid any confusion with the numerous other flower windows that we've made over the year.
Here's the cat window in a window that I talked about in the last post. I didn't care much for the cat in the pattern that Cheryl showed me so I changed it a bit. Now she says that it's a fat cat but that she likes it. I didn't think it was fat at all, just well loved by its owner. :-) The cat itself is all cut out and ground-- Cheryl packed it up so she could wrap it at home before I managed to snap my picture. Look for more progress on this one next week.

Grace has her window spot tacked so she's moving right along as well. She's considering putting this in the Shrimp and Petroleum Festival's art exhibit. I'll bet money that if she does it will win an award. This is one impressive window!

Jane has begun working on her version of the Peacock window. She's doing the actual peacock that I made a few weeks ago because it shorter than the one that Cheryl did. But she's not going to do the fancy border that I did. She likes the original one that Cheryl made and I have to agree with her. All that deep blue surrounding the peacock really gave it a lot of contrast which catches your eye. These are the teal peacock feathers that Jane cut out this week which you don't see in the picture above. Jane had a very productive week. :-)

And last but certainly not least we have a look at Gerald's Front door oval. The front is completely soldered now so this is going be completed within 2 weeks. A window this size isn't easy to wash so I'm expecting it to take a few hours just to color it and get it waxed. If he gets this all soldered next week he'll be making great time on this window.

And that's what happened here in the shop during classes. It's good to see everyone coming back in and catching up with all that's been going on in their lives during the past few hectic weeks.

Paul
Bayou Salé GlassWorks

Progressing with Projects

Cheryl's Wedding Box is completed and looking better than ever. I took 6 pictures of it but none of them caught the color of the iridescent border glass that she used. Trust me when I say that this looked even better in person. Cheryl's next project will be a window involving a cat and a stained glass window. It will all make more sense when you see it. :-)

Grace has her entire window wrapped. I don't have a picture of it all wrapped so look at this small section that IS wrapped. (whoops!) She'll begin tacking her window together during her next class. I think she'll be happy to be doing something different for a change!

Jane made great progress on this window while she was at home. She had actually started it 2 weeks earlier but ran out the door with the pieces all boxed up before I managed to get a picture of it. Jane's quick with picking up her projects but I always end up with a finished picture. This one should be completed next week.

Janice has the front side of her window all solder and the back side is 3/4's of the way finished. One more of these to go (which is all cut save for the background) and she'll be able to sit back and enjoy looking at them! We had a slight problem with Gerald's window when we slid it around on the table. One of his pieces of water hit the floor and broke. Since we didn't have another piece of blue baroque in the shop we fixed it by lowering the water on the rest of the pieces. Then Gerald proceeded to cut the background for this window. By the end of the class he was all cut and ground. This window is almost ready for solder now!

We'll have a new student (Julie) coming in for our next set of classes so expect to see a butterfly in the next post. Julie plans on working her way up to a peacock window and judging by her enthusiasm I'm betting she's going to do it soon enough!

Paul
Bayou Salé GlassWorks

July In A Nutshell

The last 3 weeks of July was a slow period for classes and with only 1 picture or so a week I just held off to post the pictures all in one shot. With school beginning again and vacations coming to an end I think we'll have more students in on a regular basis.

We've been participating in the Franklin Farmer's Market on Saturdays (7am - 12pm) and Tuesdays (1pm - 6pm) and have made a number of new items to sell there. This was made 2 weeks ago and is certainly colorful. It's a variation of the Peacock window that Cheryl made in June (which cane be found in the June section of this Blog). The Peacock is certainly a hit-- it gets a lot of comments at the Farmer's Market. And Jane is making a variation of this one (with different borders) as I type this.

Fran made two Fleur De Lis windows using iridescent glass for the Fleur De Lis' and the borders. She did most of the work at home and did a great job.

This is a picture of one of Fran's Fleur De Lis one week earlier. What a difference a week makes!

Grace spent most of the month wrapping all the pieces for her window. She was also away during a good portion of the month so it didn't take her nearly as long to wrap this as it might have sounded. Nonetheless, there are a LOT of pieces in this window! As she enters August Grace only needs to wrap the clear glass Fleur De Lis' to get ready for tacking this together. There are 8 small rounded accent pieces that need to be cut also but she's not sure what color they'll be yet. She'll decide that when she gets a better look at her window.

Meanwhile, Janice worked steadily away on her last 2 windows of this design. This just needs the 4 pieces of background glass and a border and then it will be complete. Next week Janice will begin soldering her window and the following week it will go home with her.

Cheryl worked on her latest wedding box. It may be hard to make out here in the picture but once I tell you it's two hearts intertwined you'll have no problems discerning the pattern. Once she grinds, wraps and tacks the background all she'll need to do is add a border and a box bottom to finish this.

And like magic it's now one week later and Cheryl has ground the background glass, wrapped it, tacked it and added a border. She also soldered it and added a hinge to the top, which isn't visible because it was done correctly :-). Without a doubt, this will be finished next week. (I ought to know-- I have the picture of it completed already!)

I'll make another entry on Thursday to help get things caught up. That's what happened in July here at Bayou Salé GlassWorks. Come back soon!

Paul
Bayou Salé GlassWorks

Plenty To See At The Farmer's Market

We've been setting up a booth and selling at the Farmer's Market in Franklin on Tuesdays and Saturdays so we've been knocking out a few new items to take with us. During this past week we added this stained glass sun that we drew up for a student but hadn't actually been made yet. Now it's made and we can see what it looks like.

We also have a 3D heart completed. I'd lost my original pattern and only made one of these so I could see what the finished size looked like before committing to a number of them at this size. In my opinion it's the perfect size so I'll be making at least a few more of these.

I had made one of these Humming Birds years ago and someone expressed an interest in it after seeing the photograph on the website. I redrew it and, like the 3D Heart, I think it came out just right. This one's fun to make and we've had a LOT of people comment on it.

These are some quick and simple beveled suncatchers. This one has yellow accents.
This one has peach/champagne accents.
And this one has blue accents.

Now we're on to what happened during classes during the week. Gerald did return and he's got all of his blue water cut for the bottom of his large Iris window. All that's left is some background glass and he'll be all set with this.

Janice has the background cut for one of her windows. It's hard to see against the white pattern paper but take my word-- it's cut!

While I was in town the other day I found myself just a block away from Janice's house and snapped this picture so you can see how the windows look on the front of the house. Nest time I hope to grab a picture at night with the light on in the room the windows are installed in. You can't begin to imagine how nice they look with light behind them.

And Grace has begun wrapping her window. She's got more than a quarter of the window finished which tells me that her speed in wrapping has increased dramatically.
Sadly, Cheryl was unable to make it in this week due to a number or babies being born at the hospital (she's a nurse). But had she shown up she would have begun working on her latest Invitation box. This is the pattern for it. I guess she'll start it next week.

So if you're in Franklin Saturday morning (7 - 12) or Tuesday afternoons (2-6) drop by the Farmers Market to visit us and see everything there is to see there.

Paul
Bayou Salé GlassWorks
